US Existing Home Sales Rise Slightly in September

Existing home sales in the United States increased by 1.5% in September, reaching an annualized rate of 3.99 million, surpassing the estimated 3.95 million, as reported by the National Association of Realtors (NAR). This uptick offers a glimmer of hope in a generally sluggish housing market, as August and September marked the slowest months for sales this year on a seasonally adjusted basis.

Regional sales data revealed a mixed picture: sales rose in the South and West, remained unchanged in the Midwest, and declined in the Northeast. Year-over-year comparisons showed a decline in sales across all four regions, indicating ongoing challenges in the market. NAR Chief Economist Lawrence Yun noted that rising mortgage rates are complicating the purchasing process for buyers, while increased inventory and longer selling times are shifting some negotiating power to buyers, who may now expect price discounts or incentives from sellers.

Despite the monthly increase, analysts caution that one month of growth does not signal a recovery. The persistent annual declines across all regions suggest that housing demand remains weak, which could have implications for economic growth and influence the Federal Reserve's policy decisions moving forward. The report tracks completed purchases of previously owned homes, including single-family houses, condominiums, and co-ops, and is closely monitored for insights into housing demand and mortgage rate impacts.
