Energy storage, and continuous power supply

Reducing the dependence of energy grids on fossil fuels means ensuring renewables can provide the grid with power when it is needed, not just when it is being generated. Some zero emission sources can already run continuously, such as nuclear and geothermal, but others cannot.

For wind and solar, consistent energy supply requires deployment of energy storage systems, able to serve the grid when power generation is low.

Investment in this technology is one of the focuses of UK-based Triple Point, today’s guest on Stories of Transformation, which provides debt financing to UK renewable energy projects, for the development and deployment of grid-scale battery energy storage systems.

We’re joined by Sean Brophy, CCO at Triple Point, and Jonathan Hick, head of energy transition. We cover the retreat of traditional banks in financing these deals (1:35) and how that has been driven by profitability (3:16); the different types of energy storage (5:00); making the sector financeable (7:16); the role of cap and floor schemes (9:21); grid connection delays (11:25); and the impact of grid reforms (13:39).
