European Central Bank Launches Pontes Service for Tokenised Finance

The European Central Bank (ECB) has introduced a new service named Pontes, aimed at facilitating wholesale transactions in tokenised assets using central bank money. This initiative marks a significant step towards integrating blockchain technology with traditional finance, as major financial institutions such as Deutsche Bank, Santander, and Societe Generale have already joined the platform, with more expected to participate.

Pontes connects distributed-ledger markets with the ECB's existing settlement infrastructure, allowing institutions to trade tokenised securities without the need for stablecoins or other private digital currencies for settlement. This development could streamline traditional securities transactions, which often involve multiple intermediaries and lengthy reconciliation processes, by automating these steps through a shared digital infrastructure.

While Pontes is not yet a fully native on-chain settlement system, the ECB has indicated that initial settlement finality for cash transactions will remain within its TARGET2 system. However, the central bank plans to transition to a Eurosystem-operated distributed ledger technology (DLT) platform in the future, incorporating smart contracts and extended operating hours. This shift suggests a gradual integration of blockchain infrastructure into the traditional financial landscape, rather than a complete embrace of cryptocurrency.
