Federal Reserve Expected to Raise Interest Rates in September

The Federal Reserve is set to announce its interest rate decision for September, with market predictions indicating an 88% likelihood of a 25 basis point increase. This decision comes amid varying expectations from major financial institutions regarding future rate hikes and economic conditions.

Bank of America anticipates a hike this month, although it expects dissent from Fed officials such as Christopher Waller. The bank projects a median dot of 4.1% for 2026 and warns that not raising rates could lead to increased long-term yields. Meanwhile, Goldman Sachs argues against aggressive tightening, suggesting that the current inflation overshoot is largely due to temporary factors, which may lead some Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) members to hesitate on signaling further hikes.

UBS also predicts rate increases in September and December, with dissent expected from officials like Bowman and Waller. Their forecast for the 2026 median dot stands at 3.9%, with a similar projection for 2027. Wells Fargo supports the view of two 25 basis point hikes in the near future, while acknowledging the possibility of a single hike being sufficient.
