Nike Shares Hit 12-Year Low Amid Turnaround Challenges and Market Pressure

Nike shares fell to a 12-year low on Wednesday, trading near $35.80, marking a decline of approximately 40% year to date and nearly 80% below their peak of about $179 in November 2021. This significant drop reflects growing concerns among investors regarding the company's turnaround efforts, which have not yet translated into improved sales figures. Wall Street analysts have responded with price target cuts, with Telsey Advisory reducing its target from $47 to $44 while maintaining a Market Perform rating, and Baird downgrading the stock from Outperform to Neutral with a similar target adjustment.

The challenges facing Nike are compounded by weak demand in China, where domestic competitors such as Anta and Li Ning are gaining market share. Additionally, rising tariff costs on goods manufactured outside the United States have further strained the company's financial performance. Nike's CEO Elliott Hill acknowledged ongoing top-line headwinds, while CFO Matthew Friend noted that sell-through rates remain problematic. Despite these challenges, Hill pointed to some progress in performance categories as part of a strategic shift back toward wholesale and sport-specific products.

The impending removal of Nike from the S&P 100 index on September 21 adds another layer of pressure, as index-linked selling could exacerbate the stock's decline. Analysts suggest that the current valuation reset may be more sentiment-driven than a direct reflection of the company's underlying business health, especially given that fiscal 2026 revenue was reported as roughly flat at $46.4 billion. Investors are now looking ahead to October 1, when Nike will report its fiscal first quarter 2027 results, which will serve as a critical indicator of whether the company's strategic changes are yielding positive results.
