Federal Reserve Official Highlights Upside Risks of Inflation

Federal Reserve official Michelle Hammack emphasized the ongoing challenges posed by inflation during recent comments. She noted that inflation remains elevated, driven by solid demand for goods and services, and highlighted that the risks of inflation are tilted to the upside. Hammack pointed out that supply shocks are a significant challenge for the Federal Reserve's policy, complicating efforts to stabilize prices.

Hammack stated that the longer inflation stays high, the more difficult it becomes to return it to the Fed's target levels. She acknowledged that while the labor market is close to full employment, the Fed faces limitations in addressing supply disruptions directly. These factors contribute to the persistent price pressures that the central bank must manage carefully.

Market expectations for a potential interest rate hike in October have risen, with current estimates suggesting a 66% likelihood. This marks an increase from earlier in the week, when expectations were around 50%. Hammack's comments indicate a cautious approach to monetary policy, reflecting her concerns about the implications of prolonged elevated inflation.
