Fervo Energy (FRVO) Stock Rallies 15% on Major Google Geothermal Partnership
Key Highlights
- Fervo Energy shares surged 15% following disclosure of a record power agreement with Google
- The agreement encompasses approximately 400 megawatts of geothermal electricity from the Cape Station facility in Utah
- Energy deliveries to Google are scheduled to commence in 2028, with an expansion option for an additional 600MW available through June 2030
- The Cape Station development represents over $2 billion in investment as Fervo builds what aims to be the planet’s largest enhanced geothermal installation
- Google plans to power a Utah-based data center with the electricity, though the specific site remains undisclosed
Shares of Fervo Energy (FRVO) posted a 15% gain Tuesday morning following a Wall Street Journal report revealing the geothermal developer had finalized its biggest power agreement ever with Google, owned by Alphabet.
The agreement secures approximately 400 megawatts of clean electricity generation from Fervo’s Cape Station development located in southwestern Utah. This capacity is sufficient to meet the power demands of a medium-sized metropolitan area.
Energy deliveries to Google from Cape Station are targeted to begin in 2028. Fervo is actively developing Cape Station with the ambition of creating the world’s most expansive enhanced geothermal energy facility.
The firm employs innovative technology adapted from petroleum extraction methods, utilizing hydraulic fracturing techniques to develop geothermal reservoirs deep underground for power generation. Cape Station represents a capital commitment exceeding $2 billion, with initial grid-connected power production anticipated later this calendar year.
The tech giant intends to utilize this electricity supply for a planned data center facility within Utah. The precise site selection remains pending, and the development awaits necessary state and municipal regulatory clearances.
“While we currently lack finalized details on exactly how this will support a data center…we’re confident it will serve as a critical foundational element of power infrastructure for a data center footprint in Utah,” stated Lucia Tian, who directs advanced energy technologies at Google.
The agreement also includes provisions allowing Google to increase its contracted capacity by approximately 600 megawatts before the June 2030 deadline.
Building on Years of Collaboration
The partnership between these two companies spans approximately five years. Their collaboration originated with a modest 3-megawatt demonstration project in Nevada that became operational in 2023. This initial venture evolved into a more substantial 115-megawatt arrangement in Nevada incorporating Fervo, Google, and power provider NV Energy.
Fervo has secured contracts totaling approximately 1,000 megawatts across its customer portfolio. Additional major clients include energy giant Shell and Southern California Edison utility.
The company completed its public market debut in May, securing over $2 billion through its initial public offering. Prior to going public, Fervo attracted $462 million in private investment from backers including Google and Breakthrough Energy Ventures, the climate-focused investment fund led by Bill Gates. Gates has supported the company from its early stages.
Chief Executive Tim Latimer characterized the agreement in clear business terms. “This represents our conversion of that $2.2 billion in IPO capital into accelerated commercial expansion, which is precisely the objective,” he explained.
The Geothermal Advantage
Carbon-free electricity that provides continuous baseload power, such as geothermal energy, has become increasingly valuable to technology firms expanding their data center infrastructure.
Electrical grid interconnection timelines frequently extend deep into the 2030s because of equipment supply constraints and complicated engineering demands. Securing power commitments in advance has emerged as a strategic imperative.
Google has diversified its clean energy strategy, pursuing agreements with nuclear energy developers and advanced energy storage providers to establish a varied portfolio of electricity sources.
Alphabet (GOOGL) shares declined 2.09% during Tuesday’s session, while FRVO maintained approximately 4% gains heading into the afternoon trading period.
