French Consumer and Business Confidence Remains Weak in September

Consumer confidence in France remained steady in September at a reading of 86, matching expectations but still below the long-term average of 100. Households expressed a slightly more optimistic view regarding their future standard of living, with the corresponding balance increasing by two points to -60, although this figure remains significantly lower than the long-term average of -29. Additionally, perceptions of unemployment prospects improved, with the balance decreasing by three points to 55.

In contrast, business confidence in France declined to 96, falling short of the expected 97 and down from a prior reading of 98. This downturn is attributed to a decrease in sentiment within the services sector, where the balance dropped from 99 to 98. Employment conditions also reflected a slight decline, contributing to an overall negative sentiment in the business climate, which continues to lag behind its long-term average.

Despite these challenges, business activity data at the end of the third quarter has not been significantly impacted. However, ongoing inflation pressures, exacerbated by rising oil prices, pose a risk to the economy's stability. The balance of future inflation expectations has surged to -9, the highest level since May, indicating growing concerns among consumers about price increases. If inflation continues to rise, it could have more pronounced effects on the French economy in the upcoming quarter.
