GE Vernova (GEV) Stock Climbs Following NRC Approval for Tennessee Nuclear Reactor
Key Takeaways
- GE Vernova and Hitachi received NRC approval for their BWRX-300 reactor construction permit in Tennessee’s Clinch River site.
- The regulatory approval process was completed in just 14 months, beating the NRC’s timeline by four months.
- This marks only the second construction permit for a novel US reactor design in more than ten years.
- The Tennessee Valley Authority continues searching for a funding partner, potentially a data center operator, to support the project.
- GEV shares finished Tuesday at $962.49, gaining 1% during the session and climbing 6% over the last month.
GE Vernova shares advanced to $962.49 by Tuesday’s closing bell, posting a 1% gain. The upward momentum followed news that the Nuclear Regulatory Commission granted construction authorization for an advanced reactor developed alongside partner Hitachi.
The nuclear facility, designated as the BWRX-300, represents a downsized iteration of the boiling-water reactor technology GE has manufactured for many years.
Construction will take place at Tennessee’s Clinch River location, a property managed by the Tennessee Valley Authority, a federally owned power utility.
The regulatory clearance arrived in merely 14 months, coming in four months earlier than the NRC’s projected timeline.
Both Congressional leaders and the Trump administration have applied pressure on the NRC to expedite reactor certification processes. This swift approval demonstrates tangible results from that push.
This represents just the second construction authorization granted for an innovative US reactor configuration in over a decade. TerraPower, the Bill Gates-supported venture developing a Wyoming facility, received the first.
While a construction permit doesn’t ensure the reactor will ultimately be completed, it represents significant progress beyond preliminary announcements toward actual building activities.
The Advantage of Compact Reactor Design
The BWRX-300 delivers 300 megawatts of generating capacity, sufficient to supply electricity for approximately 300,000 households.
Traditional reactor configurations frequently exceeded 1,000 megawatts. The reduced footprint enables components to be manufactured off-site and installed more quickly, an attractive feature for utilities.
Ontario is currently constructing its first unit in Canada, with ambitions to build as many as four units total. Blue Energy, a nuclear development company, submitted a permit application for a Texas installation earlier this month.
Financial Backing Remains Uncertain
TVA must still secure a co-investor to share construction expenses. A utility spokesperson acknowledged concerns about the financial burden associated with an innovative reactor of this nature.
The potential partner might be a data center operator or another substantial commercial electricity consumer requiring reliable baseload power. No agreements have been finalized at this stage.
Advanced nuclear facilities typically carry higher price tags compared to alternative power generation options, which explains why American utilities have hesitated to pursue new construction.
The underlying assumption is that expenses will decline as additional reactors enter operation. Engineering teams can establish standardized procedures rather than addressing unique challenges with each installation.
Canadian projections suggest their fourth BWRX-300 unit will cost 33% to 40% less than the initial reactor. TVA representative Scott Allen Fiedler noted that Tennessee could leverage this approval to streamline future regulatory processes.
Nuclear energy doesn’t represent the primary revenue source for either GE Vernova or Hitachi. Both corporations derive the majority of their income from alternative business segments.
However, nuclear technology holds strategic importance for GE Vernova. Currently, natural gas turbines supporting AI data center infrastructure generate most of the company’s earnings.
Nuclear power could provide the organization with an additional growth trajectory into the 2030s, independent of whether the gas turbine expansion continues.
Zacks Investment Research currently assigns GEV a Hold rating with a Zacks Rank of #3. Wall Street analysts anticipate the company’s next earnings report will reveal $4.08 per share, representing a 149% year-over-year increase, alongside revenue reaching $12.07 billion.
