S&P 500 Equal-Weight Index Faces Unprecedented Decline Amid Market Stability

The equal-weight S&P 500 index is on track for its seventh consecutive weekly decline, a trend that has only been observed twice previously during bear markets in 2002 and 2022. This decline contrasts sharply with the headline S&P 500 index, which remains relatively stable, largely due to the performance of major technology companies that are masking underlying weaknesses in the broader market.

The disparity between the calmness of the overall index and the volatility of individual stocks has reached its highest level since the dot-com crash in 2000. This situation raises concerns among investors about the sustainability of the current market conditions, as the performance of a few large firms does not reflect the struggles faced by many other stocks in the index.
