Mainland China's Financial Markets to Close for National Day Holiday

Mainland China's financial markets will be closed from October 1 to October 7 for the National Day holiday, with trading set to resume on October 8. The Shanghai and Shenzhen stock exchanges will be shut for the entire week, while the Shanghai Composite Index closed at approximately 3,840, up about 0.3%, in the last session before the break.

During this period, Stock Connect trading, which links the mainland and Hong Kong stock markets, will be suspended in both directions. The Hong Kong Stock Exchange will remain open on October 2, 5, 6, and 7, but without Stock Connect flows, potentially leading to thinner liquidity for China-focused and dual-listed shares.

Additionally, futures and gold markets in Shanghai will also be closed during this week. The Shanghai Futures Exchange, the China Financial Futures Exchange, and the Shanghai Gold Exchange will not operate until October 8, and all three will remain closed on October 10, which is designated as a make-up working day for offices. Traders are expected to monitor how the offshore yuan and Hong Kong-listed shares perform in the absence of mainland participation.
