Germany's September Inflation Expected to Rise Above 3%

Germany's inflation data for September is anticipated to show a significant increase, with the Consumer Price Index (CPI) expected to rise by 3.1% year-on-year, up from 2.9% in August. The Harmonized Index of Consumer Prices (HICP) is also projected to increase to 3.2% year-on-year, reflecting similar trends in price pressures. The August report indicated that inflation had already accelerated, largely driven by a 10.5% rise in energy prices compared to the previous year.

The core CPI, which excludes volatile items such as energy and food, remained relatively stable at 2.4% in August. However, a rise in core inflation in September could signal a broadening of inflationary pressures, raising concerns about potential second-round effects. This is particularly relevant for the European Central Bank (ECB), which has been cautious in its response to rising energy costs.

State-level CPI readings from regions including North Rhine-Westphalia, Hesse, Bavaria, Baden-Württemberg, and Saxony will be released at 0800 GMT, providing early insights into national trends. The preliminary national figures for Germany are set to be published at 1200 GMT. Analysts will be closely monitoring these figures to determine if inflation is accelerating uniformly across the country, which would lend credibility to the national estimates exceeding 3%.
