Gold Prices Decline Amid Rising Oil Prices and Inflation Concerns

Gold prices have experienced a decline as tensions surrounding the Strait of Hormuz continue to support oil prices. This situation has led traders to anticipate firmer inflation expectations, which may influence a less dovish approach to interest rates. Typically, such dynamics would exert pressure on gold, a non-yielding asset, even during times of heightened geopolitical risk when demand for safe-haven assets might increase.

Oil prices rose over 1% at the start of the week, driven by uncertainty following U.S. President Donald Trump's rejection of Iran's proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. This rejection has extended the timeline for normal oil flow through this critical chokepoint, maintaining a premium in the oil market. Additionally, the Saudi-led coalition in Yemen reported intercepting Houthi drones and missiles aimed at Saudi cities, further escalating regional tensions.

Despite the downward pressure on gold, central banks have remained significant net purchasers of the metal throughout the year, providing a supportive floor for prices. This structural demand may limit the extent of any pullback in gold prices, even as the market reacts to inflation and interest rate expectations. The ongoing situation in the Strait of Hormuz will likely play a crucial role in determining the future trajectory of both oil and gold prices.
