Houthi Strikes on Riyadh Airport Kill 13 Amid Regional Tensions

Yemen's Houthi movement has claimed responsibility for a strike on Riyadh's international airport that resulted in the deaths of 13 individuals and injuries to over 300 others. This incident marks the third attack on the airport within a week. In addition to the Riyadh strike, the Houthis reported attacks on Dammam's King Fahd International Airport and two facilities belonging to Saudi Aramco, although the latter claims remain unverified as Aramco has not commented on the situation.

In a related development, U.S. President Donald Trump announced an immediate energy ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine. However, skepticism arose as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reported that Russia had conducted strikes on power plants in Kharkiv and Kyiv shortly after the truce was declared. The ceasefire follows a deal for Russia to supply diesel to international markets, which has drawn criticism from some U.S. lawmakers who view it as a financial support to the Russian government.

On the economic front, the People's Bank of China set the yuan reference rate at its strongest level since February 2023, while the Indian rupee strengthened following a significant currency-support package from the Reserve Bank of India. This package aims to address a surge in corporate hedging that has pressured the rupee, which had been nearing a record low against the dollar. Meanwhile, oil prices have slightly eased, and gold has risen above $4,200 an ounce, reflecting ongoing market volatility amid these geopolitical tensions.
