Indian Rupee Stabilizes Ahead of UN General Assembly Amid Rising Oil Prices

The Indian Rupee (INR) has paused its recent decline as market participants await developments from the United Nations General Assembly, where discussions involving U.S. President Donald Trump and Gulf leaders are expected to take place. The INR had previously experienced gains due to interventions by the Reserve Bank of India but has since realigned with market fundamentals, particularly in response to surging oil prices, which negatively impact the currency due to India's heavy reliance on crude imports.

Higher oil prices increase India's import bill, leading to greater demand for U.S. dollars and widening the trade deficit, thereby exerting downward pressure on the rupee. Analysts suggest that the INR's short-term trajectory will be closely linked to geopolitical developments in the Middle East. A de-escalation in tensions could strengthen the rupee, potentially pushing the USD/INR exchange rate back to the 95.10 support level. Conversely, further escalation may see the rate break above the 96.10 resistance level, pushing the rupee to new lows against the dollar.

The U.S. dollar strengthened following the Federal Reserve's recent decision to raise interest rates by 25 basis points, with market expectations now leaning towards a possible additional rate hike in October. The Fed's revised outlook on growth and inflation has led to increased scrutiny of upcoming economic data, which could influence future rate hike expectations and, consequently, the dollar's value.
