Iran Proposes Reopening Strait of Hormuz in Exchange for Eased US Sanctions

Iran has proposed to reopen the Strait of Hormuz within seven days if the United States takes measures to alleviate military and economic pressures on the country. This offer was made by a senior Iranian government official and communicated to Washington through intermediaries as diplomatic discussions intensify around the UN General Assembly in New York.

Under the terms of the proposal, Iran would lift its blockade of the strategic waterway contingent upon the US lifting its blockade of Iranian ports and ceasing military operations in the area. Tehran is also advocating for renewed negotiations aimed at achieving a long-term resolution to ongoing hostilities with the US.

The proposal follows statements from Mohsen Rezaei, Secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council, who outlined seven conditions for restarting negotiations with Washington. These conditions include an end to the conflict, the release of frozen Iranian assets, and the cessation of the US naval blockade. The demands were reportedly communicated to the US through Qatar, which is actively seeking to facilitate dialogue between Iran and Gulf leaders.
