Long-Term Treasury Yields Driven by External Forces, Says CIFC

The Center for International Financial Cooperation (CIFC) has indicated that long-term U.S. Treasury yields are increasingly influenced by factors beyond the control of the Federal Reserve. Key drivers include significant government borrowing, rising oil prices exceeding $100 per barrel, increased spending on artificial intelligence infrastructure, and a global selloff in bonds.

Despite a recent interest rate hike by the Federal Reserve, which aimed to reshape the yield curve, overall yields did not decrease. This suggests that the Fed's ability to manage long-term yields may be diminishing. Additionally, weak demand observed at the latest five-year Treasury auction highlights the ongoing risk that yields could continue to trend higher, even with further tightening measures from the Fed.
