Micron (MU) and SK Hynix Battle Rising Challenge from China’s CXMT DRAM Expansion
Key Takeaways
- ChangXin Memory Technologies (CXMT) has launched mass production of its advanced fifth-generation DRAM manufacturing platform.
- The new production process delivers over 50% more dies per wafer compared to CXMT’s earlier generation technology.
- Two new 24-gigabit LPDDR5X memory products targeting mobile devices have entered mass production.
- Market research from TrendForce indicates CXMT captured 9.5% of worldwide DRAM revenue during Q2.
- Major competitors Micron and SK Hynix concentrate primarily on premium HBM and server memory segments, reducing immediate competitive overlap.
Micron Technology and SK Hynix are drawing attention following ChangXin Memory Technologies’ announcement that it has commenced volume production utilizing an advanced DRAM manufacturing generation.
CXMT revealed this technological milestone during the World Manufacturing Convention held in Hefei, China.
According to the company, its fifth-generation manufacturing platform achieves at least 50% higher gross die yield per wafer compared to its predecessor technology.
This advancement has the potential to boost production volumes and reduce per-unit manufacturing expenses throughout conventional DRAM market segments.
CXMT Advances DRAM Manufacturing Capabilities
CXMT disclosed that it has minimized the spacing between critical memory structures down to 11.95 nanometers through implementation of quadruple patterning techniques.
Vice President Luo Xiaodong stated that the company’s manufacturing process capabilities now match advanced technologies currently in high-volume production.
Additionally, CXMT unveiled two 24-gigabit LPDDR5X memory solutions developed on the new platform.
These components target primarily smartphones and portable consumer electronics applications.
According to the company, these products offer 50% greater storage capacity than equivalent previous-generation chips while delivering enhanced power efficiency.
Both product variants have already entered volume manufacturing.
This development arrives as CXMT progressively strengthens its foothold in the worldwide memory semiconductor industry.
Market intelligence from TrendForce referenced in industry reports indicated CXMT commanded 9.5% of global DRAM revenue during the second quarter of 2026.
Samsung maintained its position as the dominant supplier with 39.4% market share, trailed by SK Hynix at 24.9% and Micron at 23.3%.
Micron and SK Hynix Concentrate on Premium Memory Segments
The newest CXMT product offerings concentrate predominantly on mobile and mainstream DRAM categories rather than cutting-edge memory deployed in artificial intelligence infrastructure.
Micron and SK Hynix have been allocating increasing manufacturing capacity toward high-bandwidth memory (HBM) and high-density server memory solutions.
HBM technology operates alongside sophisticated AI accelerators within data center environments.
Robust demand originating from AI server deployments has motivated leading memory manufacturers to prioritize these product categories.
This strategic focus diminishes the direct competitive overlap between CXMT’s recent mobile-oriented products and the rapidly expanding business segments of Micron and SK Hynix.
The competitive threat could intensify should CXMT broaden its portfolio into server DRAM, HBM, or additional premium memory categories.
Currently, its newest product launch addresses more established and mobile-centric market segments.
CXMT is also reportedly developing capabilities to enter the NAND flash memory sector.
The company recorded revenue of 150.31 billion yuan, approximately $22.4 billion, throughout the first half of 2026, according to industry reports.
This figure represents an 873.64% surge compared to the corresponding period in the previous year.
While Micron and SK Hynix continue as dominant forces in global memory markets, CXMT’s recent production enhancement establishes China with expanded influence in conventional DRAM manufacturing.
Market observers will monitor whether CXMT can progress beyond mobile memory applications and engage more directly in server and AI-oriented product competition.
