Mistral and Cloudera Team to Meet Sovereign AI Demand
French artificial intelligence startup Mistral teamed with American hybrid data and AI platform company Cloudera, according to a Thursday (Sept. 10) news release.
The partnership is designed to address increasing demand for sovereign AI, or AI that “keeps data, intelligence, compute and operations under the customer’s control,” per the release.
“That means data can remain within customer-defined boundaries, models can be adapted and owned on open weights, training and inference can run on infrastructure and in jurisdictions the customer chooses, and AI systems can be deployed, governed, observed and improved over time without ceding control of the learning loop to an external platform,” the release said.
Mistral will integrate its models with Cloudera’s hybrid data platform, “allowing enterprises to deploy their AI models across private and public cloud environments, on-prem and fully air-gapped environments while maintaining full control,” according to the release.
Abhas Ricky, chief business officer and general manager for applied AI at Cloudera, said in the release that the partnership is happening as every enterprise is seeking specialized intelligence.
“General-purpose models are the starting point, not the finish line,” Ricky said in the release. “The real advantage comes from models trained on decades of proprietary data—the loan decisions, the production runs, the network telemetry that no one else has. With Mistral, our customers can turn that data into intelligence they own outright, tuned to their business and governed inside their own environment. That’s the shift we’re building for: ‘from renting generic AI to owning intelligence that’s uniquely theirs.’”
The partnership announcement came two days after Mistral said it raised a record 3 billion euros (about $3.5 billion) in funding.
The company’s Series D is the largest equity fundraising round ever recorded for a European technology company, per a company blog post. Mistral, now valued at 21 billion euros (about $24 billion), will use the funding to expand its frontier research and infrastructure, while also scaling commercial growth.
“During the first wave of generative AI, the central question was who could build the most powerful model,” the blog post said. “Organizations and governments are now asking … how to harness the power of AI for their mission-critical needs without surrendering control over the infrastructure and intelligence loop.”
