Nasdaq Faces Pressure Amid Inflation and Economic Concerns

The Nasdaq Composite experienced a significant sell-off last week, driven by negative sentiment stemming from higher-than-expected inflation data in the United States. This decline was exacerbated by increasing worries about the economic outlook, as credit spreads widened and credit default swap spreads for artificial intelligence-linked hyperscalers and data center operators reached record highs. The Federal Reserve is maintaining a hawkish stance in response to persistent inflationary pressures.

Oil prices have also surged, influenced by stalled negotiations between the United States and Iran, as well as ongoing conflicts involving Saudi Arabia and Houthi forces. These factors contribute to a bearish sentiment in the stock market, which appears to be precariously balanced amid these challenges.

Looking ahead, the release of the US Flash Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) data on Friday is anticipated to be a crucial event for market participants. A disappointing report could heighten growth concerns and potentially trigger another sell-off in the Nasdaq. Conversely, better-than-expected data might lead to a temporary relief rally, although it would not alter the overarching need for interest rate hikes.
