Nvidia (NVDA) Stock Climbs as Beijing Considers Chip Approvals for Tech Giants

      Key Takeaways

      • Beijing’s industry ministry has requested that Alibaba, ByteDance, and additional tech companies submit their requirements for Nvidia’s RTX Pro 5500 processors.
      • Sources suggest the ministry has communicated its intention to green-light certain purchases, although specific timelines and volume limits haven’t been finalized.
      • ByteDance reportedly contemplates acquiring approximately 1 million units, contingent upon government authorization and manufacturer availability.
      • The chipmaker anticipates distributing about 500,000 processors quarterly to Chinese markets beginning late December, requiring order commitments by September 30.
      • Wall Street analysts maintain a Strong Buy rating on NVDA stock, projecting price targets that suggest 44% potential gains from present values.

Beijing appears to be deliberating whether to authorize several prominent technology corporations to acquire Nvidia’s latest processor model. According to The Information report, ByteDance and Alibaba rank among the organizations requested to submit their procurement intentions.

The processor under consideration is the RTX Pro 5500, unveiled this month. Originally designed for advanced professional workstations rather than artificial intelligence development, Chinese technology firms nonetheless view it as a viable solution for AI applications.

Reports indicate at least one potential purchaser plans to configure eight processors per server to operate more sophisticated AI frameworks. Such configurations have become increasingly prevalent as export regulations restrict access to Nvidia’s premier datacenter technology.

      Ministry Indicates Forthcoming Authorization

China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology recently surveyed organizations like Alibaba and ByteDance regarding their processor requirements and intended applications. Sources with knowledge of these discussions indicate the ministry has informed certain companies of its intention to authorize acquisitions.

However, the precise timing of these authorizations and the specific volume allocations for each organization remain undetermined. Reuters noted it was unable to independently confirm these details.

ByteDance’s projected order volume stands out significantly. Sources suggest the company may pursue approximately 1 million RTX Pro 5500 units, though this figure remains subject to adjustment based on Beijing’s allocation decisions and Nvidia’s production capabilities.

The chipmaker projects quarterly shipments of approximately 500,000 processors to Chinese markets, commencing in late December. To guarantee supply allocation, the company has established a September 30 deadline for order commitments.

In China, the processor carries a price tag between 85,000 and 90,000 yuan, equivalent to approximately $13,000. This positions it competitively alongside Huawei’s Ascend 950PR, a domestically produced AI processor that has emerged as a popular substitute.

      Opportunity to Regain Territory

This development arrives at a critical juncture for Nvidia’s Chinese operations. Chief Executive Jensen Huang has acknowledged that American export restrictions decimated the company’s dominance in China’s advanced AI processor sector from approximately 95% to essentially nothing.

Financial data supports this assessment. H200 sales to Chinese clients represented under 1% of Nvidia’s datacenter revenue during the quarter concluded July 26.

Huawei and other Chinese manufacturers have filled this vacuum. Nevertheless, Chinese technology firms continue experiencing computing capacity shortages, with Huawei acknowledging difficulties meeting demand levels.

Should Beijing authorize these acquisitions and the RTX Pro 5500 satisfy American export compliance requirements, Nvidia could secure renewed access to a market where it previously dominated. The company has attributed outdated American restrictions and Chinese import constraints as primary barriers to market participation.

According to TipRanks, NVDA maintains a Strong Buy consensus rating based on 31 unanimous Buy recommendations. The average analyst price target of $324.32 represents 44% upside potential from current trading levels, with shares climbing nearly 21% year-to-date.
