NY Fed Survey Indicates Rising Unemployment Expectations

The latest monthly survey conducted by the Federal Reserve Bank of New York reveals a significant increase in expectations for rising unemployment, reaching levels not seen since April 2020. This shift in sentiment reflects growing concerns among consumers regarding the labor market, which has shown mixed signals overall.

Inflation expectations remain relatively stable, with one-year expectations unchanged at 3.6%. However, three-year inflation expectations have slightly decreased to 3.2%, down from 3.3% in the previous survey. Five-year inflation expectations also remained steady at 3%. Despite these figures, the survey indicates a deterioration in consumer views about current and future personal finances, alongside projections for higher gasoline prices.

The report suggests that there is little positive news for the Federal Reserve, particularly as inflation expectations are a critical metric in their decision-making process. Currently, the market is pricing in a 57% likelihood of an interest rate hike in the near future.
