OpenAI's Revenue Figures Reveal $20 Billion Discrepancy

OpenAI's annualized revenue has been revised to approximately $50 billion, significantly lower than the previously reported $70 billion figure. This discrepancy highlights the complexities involved in comparing revenue figures among private artificial intelligence companies, particularly as they prepare for potential public listings. The higher revenue figure was initially presented to investors to facilitate a direct comparison with rival Anthropic, which employs a different accounting methodology.

The difference in revenue reporting stems from how each company accounts for sales made through cloud partners. Anthropic records the full value of sales as revenue and lists the partner's share as an expense, while OpenAI only accounts for its own share of certain partner sales. Both companies adhere to U.S. generally accepted accounting principles, but their differing interpretations of customer relationships and product delivery lead to significant variations in reported figures.

This situation serves as a reminder for investors in publicly traded AI-related companies, such as cloud service providers and chip manufacturers, that annualized revenue figures from private firms are not audited and can be influenced by accounting choices rather than actual market demand. As both OpenAI and Anthropic navigate their financial disclosures, scrutiny over their accounting practices is expected to increase, especially if they pursue public offerings.
