RBA Governor Signals Potential for Continued Rate Hikes Amid Inflation Concerns

Michele Bullock, the Governor of the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA), has indicated that the central bank is leaning towards maintaining higher interest rates for an extended period. In her recent comments, she highlighted the materialization of inflation risks stemming from both international factors, particularly in the Middle East, and strong domestic demand in Australia.

Bullock noted that neutral interest rates are rising globally, contributing to an increase in real bond yields. While the RBA can manage some external inflation pressures, the combination of domestic demand and potential second-round effects complicates the situation. This context keeps the possibility of further tightening on the table, especially after the RBA held the cash rate steady at 4.35% in August.

The RBA's next policy meeting is scheduled for September 29, with market expectations indicating a 95% probability of a 25 basis point rate hike. The central bank has also projected that inflation will not return to its target range of 2-3% until early 2028, suggesting that the current monetary policy stance may remain in place for the foreseeable future.
