Central Bank Officials Highlight Inflation Risks Amid Global Economic Concerns

Central bankers from Australia and New Zealand have expressed concerns about rising inflation risks, particularly in light of recent geopolitical tensions and supply chain disruptions. Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) Governor Michele Bullock noted that managing supply shocks is challenging for monetary policy, emphasizing the need to address second-round inflation effects. Bullock's comments follow a parliamentary testimony where she indicated that interest rates may need to rise again due to persistent inflation pressures.

Reserve Bank of New Zealand (RBNZ) Governor Anna Breman also warned that higher oil prices could lead to increased near-term inflation, exceeding previous forecasts. Breman stated that the RBNZ will closely monitor incoming data and global developments ahead of its upcoming decision in October, highlighting significant risks to the economic outlook. The New Zealand dollar strengthened following her remarks, while the Australian dollar found support from Bullock's statements.

In the United States, Boston Federal Reserve President Susan Collins cited renewed conflict in the Middle East as a key factor in her support for a recent interest rate hike. She indicated that businesses are concerned about high costs and may pass these on to consumers. Collins anticipates a second rate increase later this year, with rates expected to remain stable through 2027. Meanwhile, European Central Bank Executive Board member Philip Lane projected steady growth for the euro area, contingent on the energy crisis not worsening further. He warned that a second wave of energy price increases could elevate inflation before it begins to decline in mid-2027.
