Low Expectations for Trump-Xi Meeting Amid Trade Truce Extension

Ahead of the meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping in Washington, expectations remain low for significant breakthroughs in trade relations. Analysts suggest that the meeting itself may be the primary outcome, rather than any major agreements. Both countries are expected to extend the Busan trade truce, which is set to expire in November, although any additional trade outcomes are likely to be modest.

U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer indicated that the focus will not be on a comprehensive deal but rather on managing the bilateral relationship. Potential announcements may include tariff carve-outs for up to $30 billion in Chinese exports, covering categories such as U.S. agriculture, energy, and medical products, as well as Chinese consumer and low-tech goods. However, these developments are expected to provide only incremental relief to affected sectors.

Despite the low expectations, some analysts view the regular meetings between the leaders as a positive step towards stabilizing relations, especially after a year marked by high tariffs and trade disruptions. Friction points remain, particularly regarding U.S. access to critical minerals and Chinese pushback against recent Federal Communications Commission import restrictions on advanced robotics. Discussions on artificial intelligence are also anticipated, with a proposed U.S. warning system for sharing national security threats related to AI on the agenda.
