RBNZ Governor Warns of Higher Near-Term Inflation Due to Oil Prices

Reserve Bank of New Zealand (RBNZ) Governor Anna Breman stated that persistently high oil prices are likely to push near-term inflation above the levels projected in the Bank's September Monetary Policy Statement. Her comments come as the RBNZ prepares for its next policy decision scheduled for October 28, emphasizing the need to assess incoming data and global developments before committing to any specific policy response.

Breman highlighted that while the economic recovery in New Zealand is ongoing, it remains uneven across different sectors. She noted that significant risks to the economic outlook persist, with upside inflation risks linked to rising energy costs and downside risks stemming from weaker domestic demand. The RBNZ had previously raised the Official Cash Rate by 25 basis points to 2.75% in September, marking its second consecutive increase since resuming its tightening cycle in July.

Markets have largely anticipated a pause in rate changes during the upcoming October meeting, following the recent hike. Breman's acknowledgment of oil prices as a factor influencing inflation adds a new dimension to the RBNZ's considerations, although it does not indicate an immediate shift in policy direction. The central bank's focus remains on balancing the inflation outlook with the ongoing recovery, which is expected to strengthen over the coming quarters.
