US to Ground All Iranian Airlines Starting September 23
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced that all Iranian airlines will be grounded worldwide beginning September 23, as part of an intensified sanctions campaign against Iran. This measure threatens to cut off any airport, fuel supplier, or ticketing company that services Iranian airlines from the US dollar financial system, effectively isolating these carriers from international operations. This announcement follows recent sanctions imposed on the 27 remaining Iranian airlines that had not yet faced penalties, closing a significant gap in the sanctions regime affecting Iran's aviation sector.
In response to the impending sanctions, Turkey has stated it will no longer accept Iranian aircraft at its airports, reflecting the secondary compliance the US sanctions aim to enforce. Iran's aviation industry has long struggled under sanctions that limit access to aircraft, spare parts, and maintenance services, with one major Iranian carrier already suspending flights to Oman and Turkey prior to Bessent's announcement.
Bessent's comments came after discussions with Chinese officials, including People's Bank of China Governor Pan Gongsheng, regarding compliance with US sanctions on Iran. This engagement is particularly notable given China's role as one of Iran's key economic partners. Bessent did not provide details on the nature of these discussions or any commitments made by China. The broader US-Iran conflict, which escalated following military actions in February, continues to impact global energy markets, with rising crude prices linked to disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, a vital oil transit route.
