Reserve Bank of Australia Governor to Speak Ahead of Key Meeting

On September 22, 2026, Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) Governor Michele Bullock will participate in a fireside chat hosted by the Committee for Economic Development of Australia (CEDA) in Sydney at 1:00 PM AEST. This event comes just days before the RBA's scheduled meeting on September 28-29, where a 25 basis point increase from the current cash rate of 4.35% is anticipated by market analysts.

Bullock's recent comments have indicated that inflation risks are materializing, raising concerns about whether the current tightening measures are sufficient to bring inflation back to target levels. She noted that the neutral interest rate has likely risen and highlighted the challenges posed by persistent economic shocks, including higher oil prices and businesses' willingness to pass on increased costs to consumers. Following her remarks, the Australian dollar strengthened, reflecting market sentiment.

The RBA's Deputy Governor Andrew Hauser reaffirmed the Board's commitment to achieving the inflation target. Analysts at UBS have revised their expectations, predicting two additional rate hikes that could elevate the cash rate to a terminal rate of 4.85%. With markets estimating a 70 to 75% probability of a rate increase in September, Bullock's upcoming discussion is expected to provide further insights into the central bank's monetary policy direction. Labor force data set to be released on Thursday will also play a crucial role in shaping the RBA's decision.
