Robinhood (HOOD) Crypto Trading Surges 61% Monthly But Lags 38% Behind 2025 Figures
Key Highlights
- August 2026 saw Robinhood’s cryptocurrency trading volume climb 61% from the previous month, reaching $17.5 billion
- Bitstamp accounted for $10.1 billion of the total, exceeding the Robinhood app’s $7.4 billion contribution
- Year-over-year comparison reveals a 38% decline from August 2025’s $28.1 billion figure
- Event contract trading exploded to 4.7 billion trades, representing approximately 15-fold growth from the prior year
- Platform-wide assets under custody expanded 26% annually to reach $384 billion
Robinhood disclosed a significant 61% surge in cryptocurrency trading volume for August, climbing from July’s $10.9 billion to $17.5 billion. While this monthly uptick signals recovery from a sluggish July, the platform’s trading activity continues to trail considerably behind year-ago levels.
The monthly improvement masks a more sobering annual comparison, with volume sitting 38% beneath the $28.1 billion recorded during August 2025. This persistent shortfall underscores the incomplete nature of the current rebound.
Bitstamp, which Robinhood brought into its portfolio through a June 2025 acquisition, contributed $10.1 billion to August’s aggregate volume. This represented a 53% monthly increase, though the figure remained 30% below its August 2025 performance.
The native Robinhood application accounted for $7.4 billion in cryptocurrency activity. While this marked a robust 72% month-over-month expansion, it simultaneously reflected a 46% contraction compared to the equivalent period last year.
Combined, both platforms facilitated approximately $565 million in average daily cryptocurrency trading volume throughout August.
Event Contracts Demonstrate Explosive Annual Expansion
Although cryptocurrency volumes posted respectable monthly gains, Robinhood’s event contracts segment is experiencing dramatically faster year-over-year growth.
Trading activity for event contracts reached 4.7 billion in August. This figure represents roughly 15 times the 300 million contracts processed during August 2025, despite experiencing a 23% sequential decline from July’s numbers.
During the second quarter, event contract operations generated $156 million in revenue, eclipsing the $100 million derived from cryptocurrency transactions. Crypto transaction revenue contracted 38% on an annual basis during the same timeframe.
Robinhood provides event contract access through multiple venues including Kalshi and ForecastEx, alongside Rothera, a collaborative venture initiated in June. By the conclusion of the second quarter, Rothera had already facilitated over 3.5 billion contract transactions.
Congressional representatives in the United States have put forward more than 10 legislative proposals addressing prediction markets since January, with continued deliberation regarding whether specific contracts warrant classification as regulated derivatives or gambling instruments.
Robinhood Chain Experiences Expansion Alongside Technical Challenges
Robinhood’s proprietary blockchain infrastructure, Robinhood Chain, demonstrated notable transaction activity. Decentralized trading platforms operating on the network logged approximately $1.6 billion in daily throughput as of September 1, marking a 61% increase over a four-day span.
The network achieved public mainnet launch on July 1, enabling tokenized equity trading across more than 120 jurisdictions, excluding United States-based customers.
On September 4, Robinhood Chain experienced a 14-minute service disruption that suspended block generation. The company confirmed that no customer funds were compromised and traditional brokerage services remained operational.
Robinhood’s aggregate platform assets concluded August at $384 billion, representing a 26% annual increase. The funded customer base stood at 28.6 million, while margin account balances advanced to $21.5 billion.
In the wake of August’s operational disclosure, Robinhood equity closed 0.83% lower. Financial analysts at Mizuho and StoneX elevated their price projections for the security during the same trading week. The company’s upcoming quarterly earnings announcement is scheduled for November 4.
