Rolls-Royce signs first Saudi licence for high-speed engines

Saudi Engines Manufacturing Company (Makeen), an industrial venture backed by Saudi Aramco, is to partner with the UK’s Rolls-Royce to manufacture high-speed engines in Saudi Arabia.

The individual licence agreement signed by the companies represents the first such deal in the kingdom.

They will target sectors including marine and naval applications such as high-speed ferries, coast guard vessels and patrol boats, Rolls-Royce said in a statement.

Saudi Arabia is investing heavily in industrial development, infrastructure and energy projects, said Andreas Görtz, president of the mobile and sustainable business unit at Rolls-Royce Power Systems.

He said the agreement allows Rolls-Royce to combine its “mtu technology” – used to develop high-speed engines and advanced propulsion systems – with local manufacturing capabilities to build a strong domestic industrial base with advanced technology.

Makeen, the joint venture between Saudi Aramco, South Korea’s Hyundai and Riyadh-based Dussur, was established in 2021 to manufacture, build, sell and service marine and land-based engines and high-speed engines.

Launched in 2019, the National Industrial Development and Logistics Programme is driving localisation in the energy, mining, logistics and industrial sectors through the “Made in Saudi” initiative.
