Tech Titans and Wall Street Elites Attend Trump-Xi State Dinner at White House
TLDR
- A historic White House state dinner brought together President Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping on Thursday evening.
- Silicon Valley’s elite, including Jensen Huang of Nvidia, Elon Musk of Tesla, Tim Cook of Apple, and Sam Altman of OpenAI, were in attendance.
- Prominent financial executives like Jamie Dimon, Jane Fraser, and David Solomon joined the exclusive gathering.
- Both nations reached an agreement to prolong their trade truce through January 10, 2026.
- Notably absent from the event was Anthropic, though no official explanation has been provided.
On Thursday evening, President Donald Trump orchestrated an elaborate White House state dinner honoring Chinese President Xi Jinping. The prestigious affair assembled an impressive roster of America’s most influential technology and business executives.
The evening’s attendees featured a who’s who of Silicon Valley leadership. Nvidia’s Jensen Huang, OpenAI’s Sam Altman, and Tesla’s Elon Musk were among those present. The gathering also included Apple’s Tim Cook, Amazon’s Jeff Bezos, and Meta’s Mark Zuckerberg.
Additional technology sector representation came from Microsoft’s Satya Nadella and Alphabet’s Sundar Pichai. Notably, both Cook and Huang received prime seating arrangements at the head table with Trump and Xi.
Banking Sector Heavyweights in Attendance
The financial industry had a strong presence at Thursday’s gathering. Among those attending were Citigroup’s Jane Fraser, JPMorgan’s Jamie Dimon, Goldman Sachs’ David Solomon, and Blackstone’s Stephen Schwarzman.
Mastercard CEO Michael Miebach also made the exclusive guest roster. Government representation included Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Federal Reserve Chairman Kevin Warsh.
The business community was further represented by Boeing’s Kelly Ortberg and Paramount Skydance’s David Ellison. Corporate leaders from General Motors, Visa, and ExxonMobil were similarly present.
The comprehensive guest list exceeded 130 individuals, with Chinese delegation members comprising just 19 attendees. Interestingly, no Chinese business representatives were included.
Artificial Intelligence Dominated Bilateral Discussions
According to both administrations, artificial intelligence featured prominently in their bilateral conversations. Xi conveyed to Trump that ongoing dialogue on AI matters could continue, with both nations committed to preventing technological misuse, as reported by China’s Xinhua News Agency.
The competition for AI supremacy has emerged as a significant friction point in US-China relations. In recent months, Chinese AI developers have made substantial progress in narrowing the technological gap with American counterparts.
Regardless of competitive pressures, both administrations affirmed their commitment to advancing AI capabilities. This commitment persists despite mounting anxieties regarding AI’s potential impact on employment and environmental sustainability.
One conspicuous absence was Anthropic, a major player in the artificial intelligence sector. Neither an invitation confirmation nor the company’s decision to decline has been publicly verified.
The decision to host Xi with full state dinner honors sparked controversy among certain congressional members. Mississippi’s Republican Senator Roger Wicker publicly questioned the appropriateness of extending such recognition to China’s leader.
Outside the White House grounds, demonstrators assembled as dinner guests arrived Thursday evening. Protest chants including “Free Hong Kong” and “Free Tibet” echoed through the streets, with multiple arrests reported.
President Trump and First Lady Melania Trump welcomed Xi and his wife, Peng Liyuan, as honored guests. The carefully curated menu was designed to blend American culinary traditions with Chinese-inspired elements.
The evening’s first course presented yellow squash accompanied by crispy pancetta. For the main course, attendees enjoyed sesame crusted sea bass served alongside braised bok choy.
Both nations formalized an extension of their existing trade agreement, originally scheduled to conclude in November. The revised deadline extends cooperation through January 10, 2026.
This diplomatic engagement represents the second bilateral summit between Trump and Xi in the current calendar year. Additionally, it marks Xi’s first Washington visit in over ten years.
Friday’s itinerary included a scheduled tea ceremony at the White House for both leaders. Plans also included a joint visit to the National Archives before Xi’s scheduled departure.
