Apple (AAPL) and Nvidia (NVDA) Now Command Over 15% of S&P 500 in Historic Market Concentration
Key Highlights
- The combined weighting of Apple and Nvidia in the S&P 500 has surpassed 15%, establishing an unprecedented two-stock concentration record.
- This figure eclipses the previous peak of 9.1% held by Microsoft and General Electric prior to the dot-com market collapse.
- Apple shares reached a new peak of $345 following the launch of its iPhone 18 and the inaugural iPhone Duo foldable device.
- Nvidia projects fiscal year growth of minimum 70%, with CEO Jensen Huang indicating potential for over 100% expansion absent supply constraints.
- The S&P 500’s ten largest constituents currently represent 38.69% of the total index value.
In a remarkable demonstration of market dominance, Apple and Nvidia have emerged as the two most influential corporations in today’s equity markets. Their collective representation in the S&P 500 Index has now exceeded 15%, as reported by Peter Mallouk, president of Creative Planning.

This milestone represents an unprecedented level of concentration for any two-stock combination in the benchmark index’s entire existence.
To put this in perspective, during the late 1990s bubble period, Microsoft and General Electric together commanded only 9.1% of the index immediately before the technology sector crash. The current concentration level exceeds that historical peak by more than five full percentage points.
Dissecting the Index Composition
At present, Nvidia commands the leading position within the S&P 500, representing 8.21% of the index. Apple holds the runner-up spot with a 7.40% allocation.
When combined, these two technology powerhouses account for 15.61% of the benchmark’s entire value, according to S&P 500 ETF holdings information dated September 23.
Examining the broader top-tier landscape reveals an even more striking concentration pattern. The remaining constituents among the top 10 include Microsoft, Amazon, Alphabet, Broadcom, Meta, Micron, and Tesla. Collectively, these ten corporations constitute 38.69% of the S&P 500’s total market capitalization.
Apple’s equity reached an unprecedented peak of $345 during the current week. This surge came on the heels of announcements regarding the iPhone 18 series and the company’s inaugural foldable device, named the iPhone Duo.
Following that peak, shares experienced a modest retreat as Treasury yields advanced and overall market sentiment cooled. Nevertheless, Apple maintains gains of approximately 24% to 25% on a year-to-date basis.
Nvidia has similarly delivered impressive performance, with equity appreciation of roughly 20% to 21% since the start of the calendar year. Trading concluded at $224.58 per share on September 24.
Nvidia’s expansion trajectory remains tightly linked to accelerating demand for artificial intelligence processors. During late August, company executives projected business expansion of no less than 70% for the upcoming fiscal period.
Chief Executive Jensen Huang suggested that growth rates could potentially exceed 100% were it not for manufacturing and supply chain bottlenecks constraining production capacity.
A Multi-Year Concentration Pattern
This increasing concentration represents a sustained trend rather than a recent development. Analysis of quarterly regulatory filings reveals that the top 10 S&P 500 components expanded from 21.6% in September 2019 to a high-water mark of 38.8% by September 2025.
As recently as June of this year, that figure registered at 36.4% before resuming its upward trajectory.
The S&P 500 employs market capitalization weighting methodology, meaning larger enterprises exert proportionally greater influence on index performance. As both Apple and Nvidia expand their valuations, their proportional representation within the index naturally increases.
This approach contrasts sharply with certain international benchmarks. Japan’s Nikkei Stock Average, for instance, implements a regulatory ceiling limiting individual stock weightings to 10%. When any constituent breaches this threshold, mathematical adjustments reduce its proportional influence on the index.
No comparable limitation exists for the S&P 500. Consequently, passive investment vehicles tracking this benchmark must continuously acquire additional shares of Apple and Nvidia as valuations rise, since these funds are engineered to precisely mirror index composition.
Unlike the speculative technology boom of the late 1990s, both corporations support their valuations with substantial operational earnings rather than mere growth projections. Apple maintains consistent cash generation through diversified hardware sales and expanding service revenues. Nvidia’s data center operations and AI semiconductor division contribute tangible financial performance visible in quarterly reports.
Nevertheless, both enterprises confront distinct vulnerabilities related to their primary revenue sources. Nvidia’s trajectory depends on sustained capital allocation toward artificial intelligence infrastructure. Apple faces challenges within a global smartphone sector that has experienced decelerating growth rates in recent periods.
Market participants and financial analysts maintain vigilant observation of both companies as their index representation continues its expansion trajectory.
