Block Integrates Bitcoin Lightning Network into x402 Payment Protocol for AI Agents

The integration was revealed on September 24. Block highlighted that Lightning’s characteristics—low fees, rapid settlement, and high-frequency transaction capability—align perfectly with AI agent payment requirements.

Steve Lee, who oversees Block’s Bitcoin development arm Spiral, explained that Lightning represents progress toward Bitcoin becoming practical currency for daily use by both humans and their automated agents.

Understanding x402’s Functionality

x402 operates as an open payment framework. Originally developed by Coinbase, the protocol was later transferred to the Linux Foundation for ongoing management.

The system leverages the HTTP 402 “Payment Required” status code. This mechanism allows servers to demand payment when AI agents attempt to retrieve APIs, datasets or other digital resources.

Upon receiving this response, the agent processes payment and resubmits its request with payment verification included. The entire transaction flow occurs autonomously, eliminating manual checkout procedures.

Public repository records indicate Lightning integration was underway prior to Block’s formal disclosure. A September 23 code update introduced what engineers described as “exact Lightning on lnbtc,” referencing the network designation for this functionality.

Block has not disclosed specific metrics for Lightning transaction counts, merchant adoption rates, or AI agent usage connected to this new capability. The x402 Foundation’s public dashboard displays aggregate statistics: 75.41 million transactions, $24.24 million in total volume, 94,060 buyers and 22,000 sellers across the previous 30 days. These figures represent x402’s entire ecosystem, not solely Lightning-based activity.

Stablecoin Dominance in Payment Activity

The majority of x402 payment flows have utilized stablecoins rather than Bitcoin to date. Circle reported that USDC accounted for 99.3 percent of x402 payment volume during its latest quarterly measurement period.

Lightning provides developers an alternative for settling payments natively in Bitcoin rather than dollar-pegged tokens. Erik Reppel, x402’s creator and member of its Technical Steering Committee, emphasized the protocol’s design philosophy supports adding new networks without privileging any particular payment infrastructure.

Block now stands among an expanding roster of organizations supporting the x402 Foundation. Current members include Google, Amazon Web Services, Coinbase, Mastercard, Visa, Stripe, Circle, Ripple, Shopify and the Solana Foundation.

Microsoft appeared on initial supporter lists when the Foundation launched in April. However, the company was absent from the Foundation’s official roster of 40 operational members published in July.

Block maintains additional initiatives in this domain. The company has contributed to goose, an open source AI agent, participated in founding the Agentic AI Foundation, and engaged with Google’s Universal Commerce Protocol initiative.

Several organizations have recently expanded x402 integration across various blockchain platforms. Cardano’s software infrastructure received x402 capability through an early experimental release designed for development environments rather than production deployment.

Casper’s mainnet currently operates x402 infrastructure enabling AI agents to purchase online services. The XRP Ledger surpassed one million x402 transactions by July, with Ripple-supported t54.ai developing utilities for AI applications on that platform.

Amazon Bedrock AgentCore implemented Coinbase’s x402 framework for USDC settlements, allowing enterprise AI agents to procure services within corporate spending governance frameworks. The Graph similarly employs x402, enabling developers to purchase individual blockchain data queries rather than committing to subscription models.

Block has not announced timelines for deploying Lightning-powered x402 payments within consumer-facing products such as Square, Cash App or Bitkey. The company confirmed ongoing contributions to Lightning development and continued participation in x402 Foundation working groups.
