Tether Confirms Limited Exposure to Troubled Offshore Bank EQIBank

Tether, the issuer of the widely used stablecoin USDT, has confirmed that it has funds held at EQIBank, an offshore bank licensed in Dominica, which is facing potential liquidation. Tether's exposure to EQIBank is reported to be less than 0.034% of its total assets, equating to under $64 million based on its latest quarterly reserves report. This situation follows the seizure of approximately $89 million linked to EQIBank by US authorities, which has raised concerns about the bank's financial stability.

The seized funds represent about 80% of EQIBank's cash holdings, and the bank is currently contesting the seizure in a California federal court. Tether has indicated that the impact on its overall reserves will be limited, although the recovery of its funds will depend on the outcome of any liquidation proceedings. Despite these developments, USDT has maintained its peg to the US dollar, trading at approximately $0.9997, suggesting that the market views the situation as manageable.

This incident highlights the risks associated with stablecoins, which are only as secure as the banks holding their reserves. While Tether's exposure to EQIBank is relatively small, it serves as a reminder of the potential vulnerabilities in the stablecoin ecosystem, particularly regarding counterparty risk. The situation will be closely monitored as it unfolds, particularly regarding EQIBank's legal challenges and any disclosures from Tether about the exact amount of funds at risk.
