US Producer Price Index Rises to 5.4% in August
The Producer Price Index (PPI) for final demand in the United States increased by 5.4% in August 2026, surpassing the expected rise of 5.3%. This marks a revision from the previous month's figure, which was adjusted from 4.7% to 4.8%.
On a month-over-month basis, the PPI rose by 0.4%, aligning with expectations, while the prior month was revised from 0.0% to a slight increase of 0.1%. Excluding food and energy, the year-over-year increase remained steady at 4.6%, consistent with forecasts, although the previous figure was revised from 4.2% to 4.3%.
The month-over-month change for the ex-food and energy category was reported at 0.2%, slightly below the anticipated 0.3%. Additionally, when excluding food, energy, and trade, the PPI showed a month-over-month increase of 0.3%, down from the prior 0.4%. These revisions indicate a minor upside surprise, which is significant given the Federal Reserve's focus on inflation data this week. As a result, the U.S. dollar has strengthened, and futures for the federal funds rate now reflect a 64% probability of an interest rate hike this month, partly influenced by ongoing increases in oil prices.
