US Stock Indices Open Higher but Struggle to Maintain Gains Amid Rising Treasury Yields

Major US stock indices experienced an initial rise at the market open but began to lose momentum as Treasury yields increased. The yield on the 10-year Treasury note rose by 5 basis points to reach 5.212%, exerting renewed pressure on stock prices.

Economic data released provided a mixed outlook. Durable goods orders for August showed little change overall, while orders excluding transportation increased by 0.3%, indicating some underlying economic strength. Additionally, consumer sentiment readings from the University of Michigan exceeded expectations, although one-year inflation expectations rose to 4.6%, up from 4.0% the previous month. This combination of growth signals and persistent inflation concerns may keep Treasury yields elevated, impacting stock performance.

In recent trading sessions, the S&P 500, Nasdaq Composite, and Nasdaq 100 indices tested critical support levels. Buyers responded positively, pushing prices off their lows and leaving the indices close to unchanged at the market close. The ability of buyers to maintain these support levels will be crucial as rising yields continue to influence market dynamics.
