US Treasury Doubles Long-Dated Bond Buybacks, Eases Market Pressure

The US Treasury announced it will more than double its long-dated bond buybacks, increasing the maximum from $2 billion to at least $4 billion. This decision targets the 10 to 20 year and 20 to 30 year segments of the yield curve and comes in response to a significant selloff that had pushed 30-year Treasury yields to their highest levels since 2007, reaching approximately 5.19 to 5.21%. Following the announcement, yields retreated by 8 to 9 basis points, providing some relief to a market that had faced sustained pressure.

The move contributed to a decline in the US dollar, which fell to its weakest point in roughly three months, and helped Wall Street recover from a three-day losing streak. The Dow Jones Industrial Average and S&P 500 both closed up about 0.2%, while the Nasdaq Composite added around 0.16%. Moderna's shares surged by as much as 176% after positive results from a late-stage melanoma vaccine trial, benefiting both Moderna and its partner Merck, whose shares also rose.

Despite the overall market rally, chip stocks continued to struggle, impacted by elevated yields and ongoing concerns regarding capital expenditures related to artificial intelligence. South Korea's SK Hynix announced a buyback and cancellation program worth approximately $28.6 billion in treasury shares, part of a broader capital return plan for 2025 to 2027, which provided some positive sentiment for the semiconductor sector. Traders will be monitoring whether the Treasury's intervention can maintain lower long-end yields amidst ongoing economic pressures.
