USDJPY Faces Key Technical Levels Amid Market Volatility

The USDJPY currency pair has reached a critical technical juncture following a tumultuous trading session last week. On Friday, the pair surged to 158.05 after the market reacted to what was perceived as a dovish interest rate hike by the Bank of Japan. This rally encountered resistance in the range of 157.90 to 158.04, prompting sellers to push the price lower. Subsequent reports indicating that the Bank of Japan was monitoring market rates, often seen as a form of verbal intervention, led to a sharper decline, bringing USDJPY below the 61.8% retracement level at 157.536.

After dipping below this retracement level, USDJPY found support near the 50% midpoint at 156.656, which has been a significant trading range since early September. Despite attempts to break below this midpoint during Friday's session and again in the Asia-Pacific trading hours, buyers managed to re-enter the market, resulting in a modest recovery. The current trading price is around 157.455, positioning the pair near the 61.8% retracement level, which is now a focal point for traders.

For buyers to gain more control, a sustained break above 157.536 is essential, which could pave the way for another attempt at the swing resistance area between 157.90 and 158.04. Conversely, if sellers capitalize on the 61.8% retracement as a re-entry point, a decline back toward the 50% midpoint at 156.656 could occur. A significant move below this midpoint would shift momentum in favor of sellers, with the rising 100-hour moving average at approximately 156.247 becoming a potential target for further downside movement. The market remains at a pivotal point, with clear technical levels defining the current trading landscape.
