Xi Jinping Arrives in the U.S. for Summit with Trump Amid Extended Trade Truce

Chinese President Xi Jinping has arrived in the United States ahead of a summit with President Donald Trump scheduled for Thursday. This meeting comes as Washington confirmed an extension of the trade truce initially agreed upon in Busan, South Korea, last October. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced that the one-year arrangement, which was set to expire in November, will now be extended until January 10, allowing negotiators additional time to work towards a broader agreement.

Trump personally greeted Xi at the airport, marking a historic moment as it is the first time a president of either country has welcomed their counterpart in this manner. The summit discussions are expected to commence fully on Thursday, but reports indicate that aircraft deals, particularly a potential new order from China for Boeing, may not be a priority on the agenda as the company is still finalizing a previous agreement for 200 jets.

In related economic news, Japan's markets reopened after a three-day holiday, with the Nikkei 225 index rising 1.3% by midday, driven by gains in computer component-related shares. Meanwhile, Australia's employment figures showed a rise of 39,500 jobs in August, although the unemployment rate increased to 4.6%, the highest level since late 2021. This uptick in unemployment was attributed to a higher participation rate rather than job losses, which may influence the Reserve Bank of Australia's upcoming policy decisions.
