151 Solana Validators Unprepared Ahead of Major Alpenglow Upgrade

As Solana prepares for a significant overhaul of its consensus system, a readiness snapshot has revealed that 151 validators, representing 20.3% of the network's stake, are unprepared for the upcoming Alpenglow upgrade. This upgrade is set to activate on October 21, 2026, at approximately 13:20 UTC. The snapshot, taken on October 20, indicates that these validators have not met the necessary requirements to continue participating in the network's voting process.

To remain active, validators must operate an Agave-based client at version 4.3.2, register a BLS public key, and maintain a minimum balance of 0.8 SOL in their vote accounts. The majority of the flagged validators are reportedly falling short due to outdated client versions or insufficient SOL balances. This situation poses a risk for those delegating SOL to these validators, as they may lose voting power if their validators do not comply with the new rules.

The Alpenglow upgrade is expected to enhance the speed of the Solana network significantly, reducing transaction finality from approximately 12.8 seconds to about 150 milliseconds. Additionally, it will replace the existing TowerBFT voting mechanism with a new architecture that aggregates votes as BLS signatures, streamlining the process. Community support for the upgrade has been strong, with a 98.27% approval rate recorded in September 2025, and ongoing testing has been conducted throughout 2026. While readiness has improved since earlier assessments, the current situation highlights the importance of compliance for validators and their delegators.
