Absa Launches Africa's First Institutional Digital-Asset Custody Service

Absa Group Ltd., a South African bank, has launched the continent's first institutional-grade digital-asset custody platform. The service, introduced on September 21, 2026, by Absa's Corporate and Investment Banking division, is designed to provide safekeeping, administration, and transfer of digital assets within a regulated banking environment. The platform currently supports Bitcoin, Ether, assets on the XRP Ledger, and USD Coin, with Bitcoin representing the largest share of assets under custody.

The technology behind the platform is powered by Ripple, following a partnership announced in October 2025. This collaboration allows Absa to utilize Ripple's established infrastructure, facilitating the provision of custody services without the need to develop systems independently. The inclusion of XRP Ledger assets highlights the significance of this partnership, as it marks Ripple's entry into the African banking sector with a major custodian partner.

Absa's digital-asset custody service is exclusively targeted at institutional clients, including asset managers and corporate treasuries, while retail customers are not eligible. The launch comes at a time when the South African Reserve Bank projects that the value of crypto assets in the country could exceed 25.3 billion rand (approximately $1.5 billion) by the end of 2024. Absa executives view this initiative as a crucial step in bridging traditional finance with the evolving digital-asset landscape, with plans to explore opportunities in other supportive African jurisdictions.
