American Companies Significantly Increase Mentions of Open-Source Models

A recent survey by the Financial Times indicates a substantial rise in the adoption of open-source models among American companies, with mentions increasing approximately sixfold year-on-year during earnings calls and investor meetings in August and September 2026. This trend is not limited to technology firms; traditional enterprises such as PNC Financial, logistics company CH Robinson, and Siemens have also begun to explore and discuss the applications of these models publicly.

Tinder has notably ramped up its investment in artificial intelligence, increasing its annual spending from about $1 million in January to approximately $10 million by July 2026. The company has started to utilize open-source models to handle routine requests, reflecting a broader shift in the industry towards more cost-effective AI solutions.

AT&T has reported that around 40% of its AI tasks are currently assigned to open-source models, with plans to raise this figure to 70%. The company's internal AI system processes an impressive 45 billion tokens daily, employing lower-cost models for simpler tasks while reserving advanced models from providers like OpenAI and Anthropic for more complex applications. This strategic shift highlights the growing reliance on open-source technologies across various sectors.
