Bank Negara Malaysia Launches SSDS+ Platform for Tokenized Securities

Bank Negara Malaysia has introduced a new paperless securities depository system called SSDS+, which utilizes distributed ledger technology to facilitate the issuance, custody, and safekeeping of tokenized debt securities, including Islamic bonds known as sukuk. This innovative platform is designed to track ownership and transfer of these tokenized securities and is integrated with the real-time electronic funds and securities transfer system, RENTAS+, enabling efficient bond payment settlements using central bank currency.

The SSDS+ platform is primarily aimed at wholesale issuance but is also capable of supporting tokenized government bonds and corporate retail bonds. However, the central bank did not provide details on specific securities issued through the platform or any trading volume data associated with it.

The launch of SSDS+ follows a three-year asset tokenization roadmap announced in November 2025, which includes pilot projects focused on Islamic finance, supply chain financing, and programmable payments. Earlier this year, Bank Negara Malaysia conducted tests involving a ringgit stablecoin and tokenized bank deposits at its Digital Asset Innovation Center, collaborating with institutions such as Standard Chartered Bank, CIMB Group, Bank of Malaysia, and Capital A.
