Solana Launches Major Network Upgrade Alpenglow, Reducing Transaction Confirmation Time
Solana has officially launched its largest network upgrade since 2020, named Alpenglow, on Wednesday. This significant upgrade transitions validator voting from an on-chain to an off-chain process, allowing votes to be packaged into certificates that can lock transactions in one to two rounds. The upgrade aims to reduce the final confirmation time for transactions from approximately six seconds to around 150 milliseconds, enhancing transaction speed by nearly 40 times. If successful on the mainnet, this improvement will bring Solana's transaction settlement speed closer to that of centralized exchanges, where speed is crucial for trading and payment applications.
Currently, the six-second confirmation time can lead to price changes before transactions are finalized, causing delays in deposit confirmations. In contrast, Ethereum requires about 13 minutes for full final confirmation. The Alpenglow upgrade also aims to significantly lower validator costs, which are expected to decrease by about 60%. Previously, validators incurred daily voting fees of approximately 2 SOL, which had doubled following a recent reduction in block time to about 200 milliseconds. The new system will replace these fees with a fixed entry fee of 0.8 SOL per epoch, roughly equivalent to 24 hours.
The launch process for Alpenglow faced challenges, including six restarts of the testnet since its inception in early May and a failed migration that necessitated a rollback. However, a successful migration was completed shortly before the official launch, ensuring that no real funds were at risk during the testing phase. The upgrade was implemented at the start of epoch 1064, with changes taking effect at slot 459,653,000 after a transition of 5,000 slots.
