Monetary Authority of Singapore Chief Economist Discusses AI's Impact on Monetary Policy

Edward Robinson, Chief Economist of the Monetary Authority of Singapore, addressed the potential implications of artificial intelligence (AI) on monetary policy during the Beijing Financial Street Forum on October 20, 2026. He indicated that while AI has the potential to enhance productivity, leading to possible easing of monetary policy, the current investment surge in AI is primarily driving demand rather than delivering significant productivity gains across the economy.

Robinson emphasized the need for a cautious and data-driven approach to monetary policy, especially in light of the recent tightening measures implemented by the Monetary Authority in April and July 2026 due to rising inflation concerns. The authority maintained its policy stance in October, warning that if the AI boom leads to broader economic impacts and increased unit labor costs, domestic inflation could remain elevated.

He highlighted that AI-related electronic products contributed over 70% to this year's export growth in Asia, yet the growth in AI technology sectors is largely attributed to heightened investment and more efficient use of existing resources, rather than substantial improvements in efficiency. Robinson referenced OECD estimates suggesting that with appropriate investment, AI could potentially boost total factor productivity growth by up to 0.6 percentage points annually.
