Grayscale Research Director Highlights Stability in AI Computing Demand Amid Stock Decline

Zach Pandl, the Research Director at Grayscale Investments, addressed the recent downturn in AI computing infrastructure stocks during an interview on "The Stack" published on October 20, 2026. He noted that these stocks have dropped approximately 27% since the end of September, driven by investor concerns over rising borrowing costs and the high financing needs of companies in the sector. This decline is reflected in the Indxx High-Performance Computing Index, which includes AI cloud service providers such as CoreWeave and Nebius, according to data from Bloomberg and Grayscale.

Pandl emphasized that many companies in this space are still in their early stages and are capital-intensive, with some capital expenditures significantly exceeding their current revenues. The top five holdings in the index have reported a capital expenditure to sales ratio exceeding 230% over the past year. Despite the stock price corrections, he believes that the demand for computing power remains stable and is actually increasing, which could benefit these companies in the long run.

He also pointed out that the decline in token prices and the growing usage of AI agents are expected to drive higher demand for computing power. Additionally, he mentioned a slowdown in GPU depreciation and a potential overlap between AI computing power and the Bitcoin mining industry, which could lead to rising Bitcoin prices. Pandl concluded that while higher borrowing costs have negatively impacted computing infrastructure stocks, the fundamental trend of increasing demand for computing power remains intact, suggesting that this market correction may present an opportunity for investors.
