OpenAI Acquires Orchestra Bio to Enhance Drug Development Capabilities

OpenAI has acquired Orchestra Bio, a San Francisco-based startup that specializes in developing artificial intelligence agents to assist pharmaceutical companies in managing drug development projects. The financial details of the acquisition have not been disclosed. Orchestra Bio, founded in late 2022, has raised approximately $20 million in seed funding from investors including Andreessen Horowitz, Definition Capital, Insight Partners, and 8VC.

The integration of Orchestra's team and technology into OpenAI's life sciences product line, known as Rosalind, aims to provide biologists and chemists with advanced tools for drug development. OpenAI emphasizes the challenges in the pharmaceutical industry, noting that the process of bringing a new drug to market can take up to 15 years and cost over $2.6 billion, with fewer than 10% of candidate drugs successfully reaching the market after human trials.

Orchestra's AI agents are designed to monitor development tasks, identify issues, analyze the impact of setbacks, and compile critical information to support decision-making for scientists and project leaders. This acquisition follows a similar move by competitor Anthropic, which purchased Coefficient Bio for around $400 million in April 2026, highlighting the growing competition among AI firms in the drug development sector. OpenAI had previously launched GPT-Rosalind, a model tailored for biology and drug discovery, which is currently available to select corporate clients in the United States, including major companies like Amgen and Moderna.
