Accomplice in Major UK Money Laundering Case Returns £5.6 Million to Government

Hok Seng Ling, a 48-year-old Malaysian-born resident of Matlock, Derbyshire, has returned £5.6 million to the UK government following his involvement in a significant money laundering case. This case, which is considered the largest in British history, involved a total of £5.5 billion and was linked to a Ponzi scheme orchestrated by Qian Zhimin, who defrauded over 128,000 investors from China between 2014 and 2017.

Ling, who previously worked as a butler for Qian Zhimin, played a role in laundering the proceeds of the scheme, which included converting funds into Bitcoin. He was sentenced to 4 years and 11 months in prison last November after pleading guilty to money laundering offenses at Southwark Crown Court in London. The court subsequently issued a confiscation order for the funds, which were primarily derived from cryptocurrencies seized during his arrest.

The returned amount of £5,603,305 has been fully recovered, along with an additional £1,990 in interest. Ling's actions included assisting Qian in evading law enforcement by utilizing services such as Airbnb for accommodation arrangements. Qian Zhimin remains at large, having fled to the UK after the fraudulent activities came to light.
