Aztec Labs Relaunches zk.money for Private Payments on Ethereum

Aztec Labs has officially relaunched zk.money on September 29, 2026, marking the return of its privacy-focused consumer payments application after a three-year hiatus. The app's revival comes shortly after the activation of private smart contract execution on September 21, which enhances its capabilities significantly compared to its previous version. This strategic timing aims to capitalize on the growing demand for affordable and private decentralized finance (DeFi) transactions.

The original zk.money was discontinued in March 2023, with the project shifting its focus towards developing its Layer 2 infrastructure. This infrastructure, known as the Ignition Chain, was launched in November 2025, and subsequent upgrades in July 2026 enabled the private smart contract feature that is central to the relaunch. Currently, transaction fees on the Aztec Network are reported to be under $0.05, making it a competitive option for users seeking privacy in their transactions.

Aztec Labs has also undergone an organizational restructuring, with a clear division of responsibilities between Aztec Labs and the Aztec Foundation. While Labs concentrates on application development, including zk.money, the Foundation is tasked with core protocol support. The AZTEC token, which plays a crucial role in governance and staking within the ecosystem, has a market capitalization of approximately $50 million as of late September 2026.

The privacy landscape in DeFi has become increasingly competitive, especially following the sanctions imposed on Tornado Cash by the U.S. Treasury in August 2022. Other projects, such as Railgun, have emerged to address the privacy needs of users. However, zk.money differentiates itself by operating on a network specifically designed for private computation, rather than being an add-on to a general-purpose blockchain. The introduction of programmable privacy through private smart contract execution allows for more complex applications, including private lending and confidential governance votes, all at competitive costs.
